Celebrating Corks LGBTQ Hidden History

July 30, 2019

As its Pride week here in Cork this week, we are all about celebrating here at Life in Cork. Celebrating Equality, Pride, Togetherness and this year it’s 50 years since the fight for equality began in New York with the Stonewall riots. So many places have a deep history of LGBTQ+ activism but what about this little part of the world we call Cork.

Well, today I was pleasantly surprised to hear the amazing history surrounding our LGBTQ community and how many people over the decades have fought for what we take for granted today.

Today I attended a seminar with the amazing Orla Egan. A Member of the LGBTQ+ community here in Cork and saw the amazing work she is doing in keeping the History of Corks community alive with her heartfelt project the Cork LGBT Archive!

It’s a testament to all those who fought and risked their lives so we can have our freedom. We don’t have to live in fear.

Orla has done some amazing work collecting all this material and has released a book showcasing all the amazing things the LGBTQ community did during the ’70s, 80’s and ’90s.

Please make sure to check it out on FaceBook and also on the Cork LGBT Archive website
